Get to the root cause…

functional health clinic

The naturopathic clinic sees a wide variety of health concerns and conditions from:

Most people who come through arrive here because the normal range is not the same as optimal. And because a list of symptoms that conventional medicine cannot fully explain does not mean those symptoms are not real, or not measurable.

What follows are the conditions we see most consistently in clinic, and for each one, what functional medicine investigates that a standard appointment typically does not.

PMOS — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome

PMOS, previously called PCOS is one of the most common hormonal conditions in women of reproductive age, and one of the most consistently under-investigated. Being told you have PMOS without being told what is driving it is like being handed a diagnosis without a map.

The drivers vary significantly between women: insulin resistance, elevated androgens, HPA axis dysregulation, inflammatory triggers. Each requires a different clinical approach. At The Armanda Clinic we investigate the specific pattern driving your presentation, because treating PCOS as a single condition rather than a cluster of distinct mechanisms is why so many women with this diagnosis remain symptomatic for years.

What we investigate: fasting insulin, androgen panel, DUTCH hormone testing, inflammatory markers, gut microbiome, cortisol pattern.

Endometriosis

The average time to an endometriosis diagnosis in Australia is seven to ten years. In that time, most women have been told their period pain is normal, their symptoms are manageable, and that the pill is the appropriate response.

Period pain is not normal. It is a clinical signal, and endometriosis is a systemic inflammatory and immune condition, not simply a gynaecological one. The gut, the immune system, the estrobolome, and the nervous system are all implicated in how endometriosis behaves and progresses. Functional medicine addresses all of those drivers alongside any conventional management already in place.

What we investigate: oestrogen metabolites, gut microbiome and estrobolome, inflammatory markers, immune function, intestinal permeability, DUTCH panel.

Perimenopause and Hormonal Transition

Perimenopause can begin a decade before the final menstrual period, and for most women, it arrives without warning or adequate clinical support. Disrupted sleep, mood changes, irregular cycles, weight shifts, brain fog, and the creeping sense that your body is becoming unfamiliar are not inevitable features of ageing. They are hormonal signals with identifiable drivers and addressable causes.

At The Armanda Clinic we investigate the full perimenopausal hormonal picture, not just oestrogen, but progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, cortisol, and thyroid, because the transition affects every system simultaneously and deserves more than a single hormone measurement.

What we investigate: DUTCH complete panel, full thyroid cascade, adrenal function, fasting insulin, inflammatory markers, bone and cardiovascular risk markers.

Thyroid Conditions — Hashimoto’s and Graves’ Disease

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common autoimmune condition in women, and it is routinely managed with TSH monitoring alone, missing the autoimmune process, the conversion problem, and the gut and immune drivers that are actively maintaining the disease.

TSH tells you what the pituitary is asking the thyroid to do. It does not tell you whether the thyroid is converting T4 into active T3, whether antibodies are attacking thyroid tissue, or whether the gut permeability and molecular mimicry that often underlie autoimmune thyroid disease are being addressed. We investigate all of it.

What we investigate: full thyroid panel including TPO and TG antibodies, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, gut microbiome, intestinal permeability, DUTCH panel, nutrient co-factors.

Infertility and Preconception Preparation

Fertility is not simply a reproductive question; it is a whole-system health question. Egg quality, implantation, hormonal balance, gut health, nutrient status, thyroid function, and the metabolic environment of the uterus are all relevant clinical variables that a fertility-focused investigation needs to address.

Whether you are preparing for conception or navigating unexplained infertility, The Armanda Clinic conducts a thorough investigation into everything that needs to be optimal, not just for falling pregnant, but for the healthiest possible pregnancy and the strongest possible start for your child.

What we investigate: full preconception panel, DUTCH hormone testing, thyroid cascade, MTHFR and methylation, nutrient deficiencies, gut microbiome, fasting insulin and metabolic markers.

Insulin Resistance and Blood Sugar Dysregulation

Fasting insulin is one of the most clinically significant markers in women’s health, and one of the least routinely tested. Insulin resistance precedes elevated fasting glucose by years, sometimes decades, and drives androgen excess in PCOS, hormonal disruption, weight resistance, energy instability, and long-term cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

If you have been told your blood sugar is normal while experiencing energy crashes, carbohydrate cravings, difficulty losing weight, and afternoon fatigue, fasting insulin is almost certainly the marker that has not been checked.

What we investigate: fasting insulin, HbA1c, full lipid panel, inflammatory markers, DUTCH panel for androgen and cortisol contribution, gut microbiome.

Chronic Fatigue and Low Energy

Fatigue is the most common presentation in the clinic, and the most commonly dismissed. “You’re just busy” and “your bloods are fine” are not clinical answers. Chronic low energy has a specific, findable biology: suboptimal thyroid conversion, mitochondrial insufficiency, nutritional deficiency, HPA axis dysregulation, gut-mediated inflammation, or a combination of several.

The investigation determines the answer. The answer determines the treatment.

What we investigate: full thyroid cascade, DUTCH cortisol panel, comprehensive nutrient panel including ferritin, B12, vitamin D, iron studies, gut microbiome, fasting insulin.

IBS — Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Being told you have IBS is not a diagnosis, it is a description of symptoms without an identified cause. For many, it arrives with the implicit message that the gut symptoms are stress-related and largely self-managed. This explanation is both partially true and almost entirely unhelpful.

The gut-brain axis is real and measurable. But “it’s stress” without a clinical investigation of the gut microbiome, intestinal permeability, cortisol pattern, and visceral hypersensitivity is the beginning of an investigation, not the conclusion of one. The Armanda Clinic finds what is actually driving the IBS presentation and supports it specifically.

What we investigate: shotgun metagenomics gut screening, intestinal permeability markers, DUTCH cortisol panel, food sensitivity testing, SIBO breath testing where indicated.

SIBO — Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

SIBO is one of the most under-diagnosed drivers of chronic bloating, abdominal discomfort, and food sensitivities, and one of the most commonly mistreated. The bacteria are real, the testing is specific, and the treatment requires precision. Generic probiotic protocols not only fail to address SIBO, in many cases, they also make it worse.

At The Armanda Clinic, we confirm the presence of it before supporting clearance, identify the type of SIBO present, address the underlying drivers that allowed it to develop, and support the migrating motor complex that keeps the small intestine clear. Treating the symptom without addressing the cause is why SIBO recurrence is so common.

What we investigate: SIBO breath testing, gut microbiome assessment, gastric acid and digestive enzyme function, motility drivers, cortisol and nervous system contribution.

IBD – Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

Inflammatory bowel disease requires conventional medical management, and functional medicine works alongside it, not instead of it. What we add is the investigation and treatment of the drivers that maintain the inflammatory process: gut barrier function, microbiome composition, immune dysregulation, nutritional deficiencies that accumulate with chronic disease, and the environmental and dietary triggers that conventional treatment does not routinely address.

What we investigate: comprehensive gut microbiome, intestinal permeability, inflammatory markers, nutritional status including iron, B12, zinc, vitamin D, immune panel.

Food Sensitivities and Gut Permeability

Food sensitivities are rarely about the food. They are almost always about the state of the gut barrier when intestinal permeability increases, food antigens that should remain in the gut lumen enter systemic circulation and trigger immune responses that the body begins to associate with specific foods. Removing the foods without repairing the barrier produces only temporary relief.

The Armanda Clinic investigates the cause of the sensitivity, not just the list of foods to avoid.

What we investigate: intestinal permeability markers, shotgun metagenomics, zonulin, comprehensive food reactivity panel, immune function.

Autoimmune Conditions

Autoimmunity affects women at three times the rate of men, and is consistently under-investigated in terms of what is driving the immune dysregulation beyond the diagnosis itself. The Fasano triad, genetic susceptibility, intestinal permeability, and environmental trigger, provides the framework for a functional medicine investigation that conventional management rarely conducts.

At The Armanda Clinic, we work with a wide range of autoimmune presentations, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Hashimoto’s, Graves’ disease, and others, identifying the modifiable triggers and drivers that influence how the immune system behaves, and addressing them alongside any existing medical management.

What we investigate: gut microbiome and intestinal permeability, viral triggers including EBV, environmental toxin load, inflammatory and immune markers, nutrient co-factors for immune regulation.

Chronic Fatigue and Post-Viral Fatigue

Fatigue that does not resolve with rest, that follows a viral illness, or that has accumulated over years of high output and chronic stress is not a lifestyle problem. It is a clinical presentation with identifiable drivers, and it deserves a clinical investigation.

The Cell Danger Response, the cellular mechanism by which the body remains in a protective, low-energy state following significant physiological stress, explains much of what conventional medicine categorises as unexplained fatigue. Addressing it requires investigating mitochondrial function, HPA axis patterns, viral load, gut health, and nutrient status simultaneously.

What we investigate: DUTCH cortisol panel, EBV and viral markers, mitochondrial support markers, gut microbiome, comprehensive nutrient panel, thyroid cascade, inflammatory markers.

Recurring Infections

Recurring infections, whether respiratory, urinary, vaginal, or skin-based, are a signal of immune insufficiency, not bad luck. The immune system is under-resourced, under-supported, or actively suppressed by the gut dysbiosis, nutritional deficiencies, chronic stress, or toxic load that conventional treatment does not investigate between episodes.

What we investigate: immune panel, gut microbiome, nutrient status including zinc, vitamin D and vitamin C, cortisol pattern, inflammatory drivers.

Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis and Chronic Skin Conditions

The skin is the body’s largest organ of elimination, and what presents on the surface almost always has a systemic driver beneath it. Hormonal acne is a hormonal and gut problem. Eczema is an immune, gut permeability, and inflammatory problem. Psoriasis is an autoimmune and gut problem.

Treating the skin without investigating the internal environment that is expressing itself through the skin produces temporary results at best. At The Armanda Clinic we investigate what is driving the presentation, because the skin is the messenger, not the cause.

What we investigate: gut microbiome and intestinal permeability, DUTCH hormone panel for androgen and oestrogen contribution, inflammatory markers, immune panel, environmental triggers including food reactivity.

Your body is always looking to heal…it just needs the right support.

It’s important to note that many of our clients have multiple and varied chronic health conditions.

How We Approach Every Person…

Regardless of the presenting condition, every investigation at The Armanda Clinic follows the same foundational framework, because the systems that drive chronic illness are always interconnected.

The nervous system first. Chronic sympathetic dominance, the body stuck in fight-or-flight, suppresses immune function, drives gut permeability, disrupts hormonal balance, and maintains the inflammatory state that underlies most chronic conditions. It is assessed in every patient.

The gut always. The microbiome regulates immune function, hormone metabolism, neurotransmitter production, and inflammatory tone. Gut health is investigated in every complex or chronic presentation, because it is almost always part of the picture.

The environment as a clinical variable. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals, heavy metals, mycotoxins, and cumulative toxic load are assessed where clinically indicated, because the environment your body is living in is not separate from your health outcomes.

Testing that goes far enough. We use the investigations that answer the right questions — not just the ones on a standard referral. Advanced functional testing gives us the measurable data to build a specific protocol and track genuine progress.
